Andalusia, spanning 87,597 km² in southern Spain, hosts an extensive mosaic of coastal and marine ecosystems, from sandy beaches and cliffs to estuaries, saltmarshes, and seagrass meadows. Under the stewardship of the Andalusian Agency for the Environment and Water, the region’s shores support fisheries, tourism, and biodiversity hotspots that underpin local livelihoods and cultural identity. Yet these natural assets face mounting pressures: marine litter pollution, overexploitation of resources, climate change impacts (including warming, acidification, and sea-level rise), and the spread of invasive species all erode ecosystem health and resilience.

A priority for Andalusia is restoring its seagrass ecosystems, keystone habitats that stabilise sediments, shelter juvenile fish, and store “blue carbon.” Unlocking this blue-carbon capacity could deliver powerful climate-mitigation and adaptation benefits, but progress is constrained by limited information on the conservation status of many coastal and marine habitats. Strengthening monitoring, filling data gaps, and improving technical know-how in seagrass restoration are therefore essential next steps.
