Municipality of Danilovgrad, Montenegro

Zeta Floodplain Restoration through Community-engaged and Sustainable Innovative Actions (ZetRest).

Set in central Montenegro, the Municipality of Danilovgrad encompasses riverine and wetland landscapes that once buffered floods, sustained dry-season flows, and supported rich biodiversity. Today, these ecosystems are under mounting pressure. Climate change is intensifying floods and droughts, accelerating wetland degradation and driving declines in native species. Urban expansion, agricultural runoff, and insufficient wastewater treatment further erode water quality and habitat condition, while restoration efforts are hampered by fragmented policies and a lack of nature-based solutions.

Strengthening community involvement will be essential to turn the tide. Priorities include deploying nature-based approaches to manage water extremes and improve water quality; Danilovgrad intends to rebuild wetland resilience, safeguard livelihoods, and enhance climate adaptation across the municipality.
