Advancing Collaboration at the Lower Danube DEMO
Burgas, Bulgaria, July 29-30, 2024 – DaWetRest project held a meeting in Burgas to advance its work on wetland and floodplain restoration in the Danube River Basin. The event brought together project partners and stakeholders to discuss project goals, exchange expertise, and plan activities for the Atanasovsko Lake and Ropotamo River sites.
Highlights of the Burgas Meeting
The first day focused on stakeholder engagement and project introduction. Representatives from project partners CAWRI-BAS, SCORTEL, RUNI, and RIEW-Ruse presented the goals and strategic activities of the DaWetRest project. Prof. Sevdalina Turmanova, the Director of RAC-BAS, emphasized the institution’s ties with local entities and shared insights into the region’s wetlands, particularly the salt-extraction activities at Atanasovsko Lake.
The second day focused on technical discussions and field exploration. Mr. Pavel Marinov, the director of RIEW-Burgas, provided an overview of the region’s protected areas and environmental guidelines. The day included an on-site visit to Ropotamo River, where project partners identified monitoring points for data collection and assessment activities.
Next Steps
This meeting is a key milestone in the project’s timeline. Data and insights from the field visits will guide the next phases of implementation, ensuring benefits for local communities and ecosystems.
